Public Speaking at OLL
Students have the unique opportunity to develop public speaking skills throughout their time at OLL. Public Speaking opportunities are seamlessly built into the student's daily life. Starting in Kindergarten and all the way through 8th grade, students work on oral presentation in the classroom, at morning assembly, and at Mass. In addition, each year all student participate in the Annual Poetry in the Hall.
Poetry in the Hall
Each spring OLL holds the Annual Claire Menezes Poetry in the Hall. Every student prepares a poetry piece for classroom recitation. Four students from each grade are then selected to participate in the Poetry in the Hall Competition. Grade level winners and over all school winners are chosen at the end of the day.
Speech and Debate: Speech Peeps
Our Lady of Loretto School offers middle school students the opportunity to participate in Speech Peeps. Speech Peeps is a speech and debate program that is intended to develop public speaking and communication skills, listening skills, improve self confidence and leadership abilities while preparing students for high school, college, and life.
Speech Peeps meets weekly starting in January each year. Students focus on Dramatic Interpretation from selected pieces of literature or monologues. Students annually compete at the annual St. Vincent Speech and Debate Competition and the Annual Margie Burke Speech Tournament in Ross.
OLL Debate Students have the opportunity to participate in one debate held at the St Vincent's High School in the spring. Former Debate alumni assist in coaching the students. Students who stretch themselves to train are rewarded with a whole wealth of knowledge that stays with them for the rest of their lives.
